The result of the cross-cultural art project the “Eight Leaf Roses” will be presented at an exhibition in the family center in Gerðuberg (Gerðuberg Culture House) on March 14th at 16:00. This will be a single day presentation.

The name of the course “Eight Leaf Roses” refers to the multicultural handicraft skills of women living in Iceland. Participants were of both Icelandic and foreign origin.

The women of foreign origin who participated all came to Iceland last year. Some have been granted asylum, one of the women was refused asylum status and does not know when she, her young son and husband will be deported. In the meantime, others still wait between hope and fear not knowing whether or not their asylum request will be accepted or rejected.

The works of these women will give insight into their experience and perspective on life.

To spice the experience, the women (majority coming from Kurdistan) would like visitors to taste Kurdish food.

The project is funded by the Reykjavík City Council for Culture and Tourism and worked in collaboration with the Breiðholt family Center and The Icelandic Red Cross.

Elsa Arnardóttir, a student in Art Education at the Iceland Academy of the Arts, supervised the project, Avan Anwar bridged cultural and language barriers, and Fríða María Harðardóttir assisted in the implementation of the art workshop
