Greenhouses have long epitomised the town of Hveragerði. But in recent years the scale of geothermal horticulture has declined considerably, and at Friðarstaðir stand some dilapidated greenhouses. By preserving the original foundations of the greenhouses and introducing new activities that pave the way to the future, the objective is to revivify the spirit and ambiance of the place. Along with a restaurant, facilities for horticulture and outdoor public space, the facility brings together chefs and other artists, emphasising working with the raw materials provided by the place. Artists’ residences are places of rest, where choice of rugged materials, water and the proximity of nature are conducive to establishing a connection with the earth, sheltered from the bustle of modern society.
