LUDVÍK Á BREKKU

SYNCHRONICITY

Einkasýning Ludvíks á Brekku opnar fimmtudaginn 19. október kl.17:00 – 20:00 í Nafla, Laugarnesvegi 91. Sýningin er í röð einkasýninga nemenda á 3. ári í myndlist.

Synchronicity is a concept, that was first introduced by analytical psychologist Carl Jung, which says that events are "meaningful coincidences" if they occur with no causal relationship yet seem to be meaningfully related.

I have tried to synchronize a found image, with music and dialogue, that in some form or strange way work together. The boy on the screen is moving around the room, almost dancing, but yet could have some kind of convulsion or seizure. Is he making art, or is he just fooling around? ...

By saturating the colours, I've made an attempt at making a moving painting. By slowing the pace of the image, music and the dialogue down. I've tried to create some kind friction between harmony and disturbance. The dialogue is at times hard to understand, mumbling and at times almost abstract. The main reason that I distorted the dialogue, is because I don't want it to be the main focus of the picture, but flow with the movement and music. I want the moving images, music and dialogue to almost be abstract. Not serving all the answers to the viewer on a silver platter, but instead maybe ignite some sort of feelings or imagination if possible.

A stick in the forest is not art, but if you were to place a thousand sticks side by side, it might be considered art. Of course this depends on the artist intention on the work, and how it is perceived by the public.

As well as the person lining up branches to create the artwork. I'm lining up found objects to create something new. I thought the dialogue was useful since it is of non academic people, and their prejudices about what art could be, and what it most certainly is not.

By using this almost collage way of synchronising and piecing the work together, I have taken something that existed before, out of its old context and given it a new meaning, like when Marcel Duchamp turned a urinal on its side and called it "Fountain." It can be good art or bad art, but it most certainly is art, if the artist says so. The question is, if the viewer says more about the work, than the work says about the viewer.

By reproducing something into something else you get a metamorphosis of something new. A method that I'm fascinated by. And by today's standards with the internet, the possibilities are endless.

"In principle, the work of art has always been reproducible. Objects made by humans could always be copied by humans. Replicas were made by pupils in practicing for their craft, by masters in disseminating their works, and, finally, by third parties in pursuit of profit. But the technological reproduction of artworks is something new." - Walter Benjamin
