  • June 3, 2025

The Film Festival MOVIES took place for the second time at Bíó Paradís from May 27th to 29th, organized by the Department of Film Arts at the Iceland Academy of the Arts.

This time, the festival marked a historic milestone, as this year the department's first cohort will graduate, making it the first time students will graduate with a university degree in filmmaking in this country.

It's safe to say that the festival was a great success. All four shows were sold out., and demand far exceeded expectations. A total of 1,000 films were screened after 34 students, as well as a play reading of scripts by two screenwriters.

Varied and exotic program

FILMA is primarily a harvest festival for the Department of Film Arts, where students present the fruits of the winter. The festival is organized in close collaboration with students who are involved in all aspects of it, from planning and execution to presentations and screenings.

The three-day festival featured four screenings to a packed audience, screening a total of 32 films. The first screening was dedicated to the final projects of 1st year students, the second screening offered the final projects of 2nd year students, and the third was dedicated to the graduation projects of the graduates. At the end, a special celebration screening was held where the graduation projects were shown again.

The works were extremely diverse in subject matter and approach and reflected the students' collaboration, creativity, imagination, and artistic vision.
