About the programme

The acting program is a three-year program of 180 credits that ends with a bachelor's degree in performing arts. The course is taught in Icelandic.

The program provides students with a diverse approach to the art of the actor. Emphasis is placed on training the body, voice and creative thinking using the methods and techniques of the performing arts. In the program, students learn the theory of the actor and art history with an emphasis on the performing arts.

Students meet technical, ideological and artistic challenges that prepare them for work in the actor's professional field and/or continuing education.

Study structure

The foundations of the acting course are acting, practical techniques and theory, in addition to which students are gradually given an insight into the professional environment of performing arts. In acting courses, students acquire skills and knowledge in different methods of acting. In technical courses, voice acting, movement and singing are taught, which support and are woven into all the actor's work. In academic courses, students gain knowledge and understanding of the historical and social context of performing arts, increase their awareness of the profession and the actor's mission to the audience and society.

Acting studies emphasize students' creativity, critical thinking and open-mindedness. In the program, drama is brought into conversation with contemporary and other art forms, which gives students the opportunity for collaboration and conversation with students from other study programs at the school.

The performing arts department has good cooperation with both national and foreign art institutions, festivals and independent artists.

Students complete their studies with a graduation project and a final thesis.

After graduation

Students who have completed acting studies at LHÍ have created opportunities for themselves to work as actors in professional theaters and the independent performing arts scene both in Iceland and abroad. The program also prepares students well for continuing studies at master's level.

Application and admission process

The application process proceeds in such a way that first the electronic application is filled out, the application fee is paid and the application is confirmed. You can save an application while you are working on it.

The first step in the program's admission process is in the form of a video recording of the applicant's solo performance. The video recording is sent with the electronic application as an attachment. See detailed instructions below.

  • The electronic application

For an electronic application to be valid, an application fee must be paid and the following three documents must be attached:
    1. Certified copy of degree certificate(s) and programme / course transcript(s). (Required) (photocopy is not valid).
    a) Scan originals of diplomas and attach them to the application, or
    b) Get certified copies of diplomas with a stamp from the relevant school, scan and attach to the application.
    2. Video recording of the transfer of a monologue (path added to the electronic application under "Links").
    3. Photograph of the applicant. It is added under "Miscellaneous other supporting documents."".
In the electronic application, the applicant also has the option (not an obligation) to specify the reasons for the application, goals, vision and more in a short statement and attach it to the application.
Applicants receive confirmation that LHÍ has received the application after departmental representatives have ascertained that the applicant has submitted all necessary supporting documents. The application is only complete when a video recording of the monologue has been submitted.
You will find the electronic application HERE.

    • Electronic application + Video recording of the performance of the solo.
    • Opened for applications on 10 October 2024.
    • Applications close on 20 November 2024 at 23:59.
    • A three-member admissions committee looks at the videos of those who meet all admission criteria.
    • Results from the 1st step will be sent to applicants by email no later than December 19, 2024.

Factors that the admissions committee evaluates in step 1 are:

    • Text processing: The applicant's ability and potential to approach text and work on it in a creative way.
    • Creativity: The ability to creatively express one's ideas.

    Instructions for step 1.
You choose a monologue to perform. You can choose from the following monologues or a monologue of your choice.

    Monologues in limited language:

Practical instructions for the video recording:

The video recording can be a maximum of two minutes.

    • If two minutes is not enough to convey the entire text, it is allowed to cut the front or back of the recording to make it 2 minutes.
    • The submitted recording must, however, be uninterrupted, i.e. it is not allowed to join two or more recordings.
    • It doesn't matter if we get to see absolutely everything. The most important thing is that you are satisfied.
    • With the 2-minute rule, we are taking care of the equality of all applicants. Everyone gets the same time in this step as in steps 2 and 3.
    • The application is considered invalid and will not be evaluated if the video has been broken into pieces or is longer than two minutes.
    • The transfer must take place in Icelandic.
    • It doesn't matter what gender the role was originally written for.
    • If candidates choose, they may change the personification of words. Example: "I'm happy - I'm happy - I'm happy"
    • Otherwise, it is not allowed to change the text.
    • Since it is a monologue, it is not desirable to have a co-star.
    • Record the video as if you were in front of an audience.
    • Make sure the photo shows the whole body.
    • It is important that the recording is of good picture and sound quality.
    • The recording must be recorded in one shot and without zoom.
    • The recording equipment must be stationary during the recording. Vertical or horizontal recording is optional (portrait / landscape).
    • No props shall be used.
    • Do not use music or audio.
    • Do not add any special effects.

Here you can view video instructions for the video recording.
