About the programme

The program is a platform for courses, independent work, collaborative projects, experiments in materials and methods, whether it is practical or theoretical work.  

Art is a diverse subject and the course offerings in the BA program reflect that diversity. Courses cover various basic knowledge related to art methods, history or art theory which students reflect in their own artistic creation. In elective courses, students continue to develop their expertise. In all courses, original creation is the basisassumption. 

All students have their own studio during their studies, where topics are developed over a longer period of time in conversation with teachers, guests and fellow students. Supervising teachers accompany the students throughout the study period and provide personal guidance, while the students get to know the many part-time teachers involved in the department's work. Courses end with reviews where students are trained in critical discussions about their own work and the projects of their fellow students. 

During the study period, students have the opportunity for longer and shorter exchange studies through Erasmus or Kuno, the cooperation network of Nordic art universities. 

Study structure

The BA program in visual arts is a full-time program (180 ECTS credits) for three years. In the art department, it is emphasized that students can get to know diverse methods and approaches to artistic creation and academic thinking. The program is composed of studio, study and workshop courses. 

1 year: The courses in the first year lay the foundation for the entire program. Þmethods are presented, both technique and basis in the context of art in the contemporary and historical context.  

2 years: In the second year, students choose longer courses aimed at deepening their knowledge of media and methods. Elective course in 1. and 2. year offer elective courses, among other things, in other departments of LHÍ and specific thematic courses that explore trends and trends in the field.  

3 years: In the third year, students work independently to create a solo exhibition, write a BA thesis and work on a piece for a group exhibition at a public art museum. 

After graduation

Studying art at the BA level prepares students for master's studies and diverse jobs in the field of art and culture. 

Graduated students from the art department are among the leading visual artists in the country. The knowledge that the program brings to the students is useful in all work where curiosity and research are the basis. 

Application and admission process

  • 1. Folder / Portfolio

    Required
    • Submission deadline for material or electronic portfolio/portfolio is April 8, 2025.

    The folder is rated anonymous. It is necessary to make sure that the names of the candidates do not appear anywhere in the directory. Folders must be picked up again at the school office at Laugarnesveg 91 according to the advertised deadline. Unclaimed folders will not be stored and the school reserves the right to delete them.

    If a folder/portfolio is posted:

  • 3. Admission process

    The admissions committee consists of two permanent teachers of the department, one external visual artist or art historian, as well as the dean of the department, who is the chairman. The admissions committee selects students from the group of applicants who are considered to have the prerequisites to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts and meet the requirements for art studies at university level. The admissions committee is guided by the fact that the person in question can make the best use of the program on offer, and therefore its assessment should not be interpreted as a one-size-fits-all decision on the applicant's ability to create art in general. The admissions process consists of the following steps:
    • Applications are evaluated with regard to general and special admission requirements, and the admissions committee reviews the submitted works. Applicants who pass the admissions committee's assessment get into a sample group.
    • Those who make it to the sample group are invited to an interview. Applicants should bring 1-2 works along with a sketchbook.
    • All applicants will be sent a written response to their applications in May. Applicants who receive an invitation to stay at a school must confirm by the end of May whether they intend to accept it by paying a confirmation fee. The fee is non-refundable, but will add up to school fees if the person attends the course in the fall.

  • 4. Interview

  • Admission requirements
