About the programme

A master's program in vocal and instrumental teaching is for those with a bachelor's degree in music or similar education. The program is also suitable for working teachers in music schools who want to develop and advance in their work. The course is developed in collaboration with the music department of the Iceland Academy of the Arts.

Emphasis is placed on students gaining understanding and knowledge of the teacher's work, both theoretically and on the field. They can organize studies and study components based on current curricula and choose appropriate study materials, study and assessment methods. Teaching and communication are also examined in a wider context, and students are encouraged to present their own vision and ideas about art studies and learning opportunities in society.

The art education department brings together a group of people from all art disciplines whose goal is to adopt and develop methods of art education with the widest possible social and ideological references.

Study structure

A guiding principle in shaping learning in vocal and instrumental teaching is individualization. Students have about 12 units in a so-called focus subject that they can use to strengthen themselves in their chosen field.
The subject of emphasis can be in the form of an instrument or singing lesson, but you can also choose other focuses. An example of a field that students have chosen is an emphasis on improvisation in teaching, composition in teaching or in fact any field that students consider important to improve their skills in the teaching arena.

The program is a two-year (four-semester), 120-credit theoretical and practical graduate program in vocal and instrumental teaching that culminates in an M.Mus.Ed. or an MA degree. Students complete a 10, 20 (M.Mus.Ed.) or 30 (MA) credit final project or complete the program without a final project (MT).

Application and admission process

All applications for studies go through the application portal and all communication regarding the application process will take place there. The application fee is paid in the last step of the online application and is ISK 5.000.

Enrolled and registered students who have Uglu access must also create a separate access to the communication portal when applying for a new program.

In the electronic application, the applicant has the opportunity to specify the reasons for the application, goals, vision, focus and more in a short text. Applicants receive confirmation that LHÍ has received the application after it has been ascertained that the applicant has submitted all necessary supporting documents. In the art education department, students are admitted once a year and begin their studies in the fall semester.
