About the programme

Studying classical singing demands a lot from students. They are expected to practice in an organized way, and regularly, so that they get a good overview of the material on which the curriculum is based. In the program, students work to gain a good command of singing technique and interpretation under the guidance of the department's teachers and guest teachers. Furthermore, the goal is for students to acquire the ability to work creatively and independently. Emphasis is placed on empowerment, independent working methods and that students are leaders in their own learning. In this way, students have the opportunity to shape their own focus and play the music they are most interested in, while getting to know the diverse flora of classical vocal music. Numerous extra subjects support the main course, such as drama and movement classes, as well as participation in the department's diverse projects.

Study structure

Singing is a three-year bachelor's degree (BMus). Students work in private lessons as well as group lessons with excellent artists, national and foreign. An important part of the program is gaining experience in public speaking. During the course, students will have many opportunities to sing at concerts. In addition, participation in diverse projects inside and outside the school is encouraged, such as solo concerts, church concerts, with chamber groups, in choirs, in improvisational projects and in staged scenes from operas. Singing students receive training in pronunciation, both in Icelandic and foreign languages. When it comes to mastering the content of the projects, there is systematic work to train the singer's theatrical and creative process. There is a special emphasis on the performance of new music, where students get a valuable opportunity to work with composition students and take part in composing and premiering new works.

After graduation

After completing their studies at LHÍ's singing department, the students have gained a good foundation for continued solo studies in foreign conservatories. For those who intend to focus on teaching, BMus students are offered a master's program at LHÍ in pedagogy (MEd).

The professional director of the singing course is Hanna Dóra Sturludóttir.
