Equality, diversity and inclusion

The Iceland Academy of the Arts has committed itself to being a driving force in an ever-changing world and at the forefront of equality issues in Iceland and an inclusive university community, both ideologically and in practice. A school for all is one of the main goals of the LHÍ policy. The policy emphasizes diversity and that the school's learning and working environment is characterized by inclusion and equality. Within the school, no distinction may be made between people on the basis of factors that distinguish them and everyone should have equal opportunities to grow in their studies and work in the spirit of equality and inclusion.

  • Equality Committee

    Role and responsibility

The Iceland Academy of the Arts' Gender Equality Committee oversees gender equality issues within the school and operates on behalf of the Rector.

The Equality Committee shapes the school's policies and plans on issues related to equality, diversity and inclusion. The Equality Committee leads the lively discussion on equality issues, and the committee's visibility is an important factor in cultivating and fostering a culture where equality, diversity and inclusion are celebrated.

The Equal Opportunities Committee monitors the status of equality issues within and outside the school, has an overview of equality laws and government regulations, and ensures that equality discussions within the school are in line with the ever-changing times.

The Gender Equality Committee is responsible for the development, implementation and updating of the Gender Equality Plan. In addition, the committee provides support to each department, support services and student council in setting an action plan for implementing the Gender Equality Plan.

The Gender Equality Committee participates in the universities' annual Gender Equality Days with events both within and outside the university.

The Equality Committee's email address is equali@lhi.is

    Committee structure and arrangements

Í The equality committee consists of five members, who represent equality issues within the school.

The committee is composed as follows:

There are three staff representatives and they are appointed by the executive board, which advertises for candidates to sit on the committee. When selecting representatives, care must be taken to ensure that the committee reflects the diversity of the school community as best as possible. Staff representatives are appointed for a minimum of two years at a time, and at least one representative from the previous year must sit on the committee to ensure continuity in the committee's work between school years.

The Student Council appoints one student representative who serves on the committee for a minimum of one year.

In addition, the school's equality representative sits on the committee and is appointed for an indefinite period.

The Gender Equality Committee shall be fully constituted in the spring of the coming school year and shall meet for its first meeting within one month of the start of school. At that meeting, the committee shall elect a chairperson who shall direct and organize the work of the committee and call meetings. The Gender Equality Committee shall normally meet once a month during the school year.

The Equal Opportunities Committee is authorized to seek external expertise each year.

  • Equality Representative

The Equal Opportunities Officer of the Iceland Academy of the Arts is appointed by the rector. The Equal Opportunities Officer works closely with all faculties and departments of the school, sits on the Equal Opportunities Committee, monitors the progress of the Equal Opportunities Plan and, together with the chairman of the committee, represents the Equal Opportunities Committee in matters submitted to the Executive Board.

The equality officer shall ensure that the equality plan is accessible to staff and students and is visible on the school's website.

The Equal Opportunities Officer collects and publishes annual information on the progress of the equality plan as well as the status of accreditation issues within the University of the Arts in general.

The equality representative receives suggestions, proposals and complaints sent to the equality committee and is responsible for ensuring that they are formally addressed at meetings of the equality committee.

The equality representative sits on the university equality representatives' consultation forum where joint projects are worked on.

The Equal Opportunities Representative at the Icelandic Institute of Higher Education is Katla Stefánsdóttir, a disability expert.

  • Equality plan

The equality plan is usually reviewed every three years, but annually the committee reviews the plan's actions, assesses its effectiveness, formulates new actions and, if necessary, reviews it. The review should begin at least one year before the current plan expires, with the goal of having a new plan ready when the previous one expires.

The Equal Opportunities Committee is authorized to establish a working group on the plan and its revision if necessary. The committee is also authorized to seek advice and opinions from staff at the Academy of the Arts and external experts if deemed necessary.

Changes to the program require approval by the Executive Board of the Academy of the Arts.

The equality plan covers all staff and students at the University of the Arts, who collectively have a responsibility to prevent discrimination and contribute to creating a society of inclusion and equality.
