Teenagers who don't like elementary school –

Empowerment through semi-formal arts education outside of school walls

Teenagers who don't like elementary school discusses how arts education outside the traditional school system can contribute to the empowerment of young people, especially those who experience social exclusion or do not feel like they belong among their peers within the walls of primary school. Research shows that artistic youth are a vulnerable group, exposed to social exclusion. Challenging projects outside of school could activate their creativity, intelligence and strengthen a positive self-image in relationships with peers.

The study uses a qualitative methodology, interviewing former participants and mentors in semi-formal performing arts education. They described experiencing the freedom to be themselves in the projects, having formed close social connections, and used the word “blooming” frequently. Theories of identity formation were used to analyze the impact of such education on the participants. The study shows that young people who do not fit into the social environment of primary school can flourish in a creative environment where they are given more space for expression and where diversity is celebrated.

The results show that semi-formal arts education, such as community theatre with young people, is an important resource that can promote positive self-image and social engagement. It can also create cultural value. However, the study also points to systemic barriers, including a lack of funding and support from governments. With these findings, the paper highlights the importance of providing young people with a more diverse educational environment and reconsidering how schools and society can better meet their needs.
