The fifth year of architectural education at the Iceland University of the Arts is devoted to further exploring and expanding both the meaning and scope of architecture and architects' societal responsibility.
This is done by creating a learning environment that incites students and their educators to respond to global challenges while creating conditions to locally engage as active citizens in their communities.
The goal of the architectural department is to support students developing knowledge, skills, traits, attitudes, and behaviors necessary for becoming ethical professionals and cosmopolitan citizens, by advancing new political agencies to co-design healthier, safer, and a fairer world, in a changing social, ecological, and political environment.
These exhibited students' projects speak of architectures that emphasize the plural, collective and collaborative nature of the practice of architecture. Architectures can be used in multiple ways; as critical processes of inquiry, as vehicles to raise social awareness, as tools for collective imagination, and as a collaborative project aimed at caring for and repairing the spaces for the common good. These projects use architecture as an instrument for care.

The fifth year of the architecture program at the Iceland Academy of the Arts is dedicated to expanding the meaning and scope of architecture and addressing the social responsibility of architects. The program creates an environment that encourages students and faculty to respond to global challenges and offers opportunities for them to engage with their local environment as active citizens in their communities.
The aim of the program is to support students in acquiring knowledge and developing skills necessary for responsible professionals and cosmopolitan citizens. With new political emphases, they are given the opportunity to design a healthier, safer and more equitable world in an ever-changing social, ecological and political environment.
The projects presented to students emphasize the diversity and collaboration that are inherent in architecture. Architecture can be used in a variety of ways: as a critical research method, as a catalyst for social awakening, as a tool for building a shared mind-set, and as a collaborative project dedicated to caring for and transforming spaces for the common good. These projects emphasize architectural practices that promote empathy.
