Luis completed his piano performance studies at the Conservatorio de Musica de Alicante in June 2022, where he had the opportunity to learn from Javier Espluges Espluges. He has also studied piano performance for a year at The Chopin University of Music in Warsaw (Poland) where he learned from Anna Jastrzębska and Joanna Maklakiewicz.
During these last years Luis has been specializing in combining his piano knowledge in classical music with electronic music, theremin and audio-visuals. He has also been able to learn the art of improvisation with great professionals such as Kristjana Stefánsdóttirs, John McCowen, Jan Ruerd and Jenifer Yanez. He is currently pursuing a degree in Political Science and Administration at UNED while completing his studies in the Master of New Audiences and Innovative Practice (NAIP) at the University of the Arts in Iceland. There she has learned from artists such as Berglinda María Tómasdóttir, Sigurður Halldórsson, Angela Rawlings and Kurt Uenala. In order to deepen his master studies, Luis has also had the opportunity to study NAIP for a semester at the Prins Claus Conservatoire in Holland with professors such as Guy Wood, Nicholas Thayer, Tine Stolte and Henrique Meissner, among others. This has given him more knowledge and perspectives of the NAIP philosophy that currently help him in the creation, development and leadership of different interdisciplinary creative projects.
Explorations of emotions
How does music affect us emotionally? Do we all respond to music similarly? How can we categorize musical emotions? Through this project, we aim to uncover the common emotional responses to music that connect us as human beings, regardless of our cultural, gender, educational, or religious backgrounds.
Over the past two years, Luis has been deeply immersed in exploring the musical emotions of people from various parts of the world, including Iceland, Spain, Iran, the USA, Holland, Slovenia, Slovakia, and more. He analysed their Spotify profiles to understand their “musical personality”. This led to the creation of unique improvisation concerts where participants decide the music that held special meaning in their lives – their Episodic Memories. This research is all about capturing the emotions embedded in their personal musical journeys.
The culmination of this research is a concert experience where different emotional states are explored through improvised performances based on songs chosen by the audience. The concert will feature Filip Mozetič on drums and Luis Rubio on piano, electronics, and visuals, creating an immersive blend of sound and emotion.
